What is the climate of Azerbaijan like?

Azerbaijan is located in southeastern Europe/southwestern Asia between Armenia and the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan shares boundaries with Russia, Iran, Armenia, and Georgia. Azerbaijan has lowlands along the shores of the Caspian Sea and a low central plain inland. The rest of the country rises sharply to high mountains with deep, enclosed valleys.

The climate varies from subtropical and dry in central and eastern Azerbaijan to subtropical and humid in the southeast, temperate along the shores of the Caspian Sea, and cold at the higher mountain elevations. The southeastern section of the country has a humid subtropical climate. Summer is almost tropical in the lowlands, whereas the winters are warm but with cold spells. The average temperature in the capital, Baku, in July is 25°C (77°F). In January the average temperature is 4°C (39°F). In the mountainous regions the climate is alpine-like; In the mountains winters are cold and snowy.

Rainfall varies according to climate zones. In the central and eastern regions, the climate is generally dry and semiarid with low annual rainfall. The average rainfall for most of the country is only about 150 to 250 millimeters (6 to 10 inches). However, at the highest elevations of the Caucasus and in the southeastern lowlands, annual rainfall can exceed 1,000 millimeters (40 inches).
