North America is the third largest of the continents (including Greenland and Central America), and over twice the size of Europe. It occupies the northern part of the landmass of the western hemisphere between the Arctic Ocean and the tropical Panama isthmus. In Canada and the USA, the Great Plains of the interior separate the Rocky Mountains to the west. These western mountains extend south into Mexico as the Sierra Madre.
